Robert Woodman has always had a connection to the soil as a young boy; from digging holes all over his Mothers garden until his Grandfather guided him into the more productive efforts of growing tomatoes.  This passion for all things green lead him to gain employment in one of the world’s most prestigious horticultural establishment, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England.  During his time there he learned valuable skills in plant cultivation and became a member on expeditions to the mountains of Tasmania, Australia and the jungles of Irian Jaya, to collect new plants for taxonomic study.

From there his wanderlust lead him to manage a Botanic Garden on the island of Tortola, part of the British Virgin islands, where he met his wife, a North Dakota native, who eventually brought him to America.  After moving around from Minnesota to Arizona, he finally settled down in Virginia, working as a Head Gardener on a private estate in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  For the past 8 years, Robert has been working for Merrifield Garden Center in both the Fairoaks and their newest facility in Gainesville.

Robert has been featured as a landscape designer on four episodes of HGTV’s show “Curb Appeal” as well as being a regular on Merrifield’s local TV show, “The Garden Advisor”, aired live on Saturday mornings, News Channel 8.  He has written articles for the ‘Virginia Gardener’ and ‘Fine Gardening’ and is a regular speaker for Merrifield’s gardening seminars and garden club presentations.  His most recent endeavors has been setting up a blog, ‘The British’, where he regularly writes posts on many different aspects of gardening.
