​The giant dioon is the largest of the American cycads and is known to grow up to 50 ft high in the wild. The species name of spinulosum is derived from the Latin, meaning spiny or thorny in reference to the fronds.

Found on limestone cliffs and rocky hillsides 1000 ft above sea level.
