Clustering palm in clumps of 3-5, rarely appearing solitary.  The plant is harvested from the wild for its edible apical bud and various medicinal uses.

GEOGRAPHIC REGION

Endemic to Madagascar. North, Central and E Madagascar.

NATIVE HABITAT

Moist montane forests, bamboo-dominated forests; usually on steep mid-slopes.
