​Encephalartos altensteinii, distinguishes itself from other large green South African species by its straight leaves, broad, well-spaced leaflets with very few spines at maturity, and its basal leaflets do not reduce to spines. The species name altensteinii commemorates Altenstein, a 19th-century German chancellor and patron of science.

GEOGRAPHIC REGION

Endemic to South Africa

NATIVE HABITAT

Found in coastal areas including open scrub, steep rocky slopes, evergreen forests in valleys and river banks. It also occurs inland at a higher altitude in isolated sites.
