The feather-like, light green, leathery foliage of coontie emerges from a large underground storage root in the early years before a trunk develops.

GEOGRAPHIC REGION

Cuba and Hispaniola

NATIVE HABITAT

This species grows in the beach under coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) or away from the shore line but very near to the coast on well-drained sands or sandy loam soils.
